Jan. 23/ Jan.28: Thomas Moore's Utopia

We read thomas Moore's Utopia in class. This was a story written that described the perfect world. Where is it located? It's located nowhere. Can we go to it? No, it is a hypothetical world that does not exist in actuality, but it does exist in the minds of the people. It represents the only place where everything has a logical consequence meaning if you steal, your hand will be cut off. It does make sense if you think about it.

Moore's Utopia was written in response to Plato's Republic in which he wrote about a smiliar world. Moore idealized Plato and him writing Utopia was a way of him showing respect. What caught my attention in Utopia was in marriage, men could not get married before 22 and women could not get married before 18. Also, before marriage both the bride had to go through a certain ritual where they had to view their "potential" bride or groom naked. If they liked what they saw they could go on, and continue with the wedding. if they were disgusted by the site of their "potential" naked then they could choose not to go any further. That makes sense because that puts everything "out in the open" no pun intended. That removes possible disappointment and regret. Oh yeah, in Utopia no one makes more money than their neighbor. No one has more land, or more property. Utopia is a place of fair opportunity, but still I don't believe it is realistic. If everyone makes the same money, and everyone has the same career, what happens to the need to be better, do better? I guess it doesn't exist.
